Dr. Christiana PAPOUTSA

Researcher A

Education: Christiana Papoutsa holds a BSc in Chemistry and an MSc in Chemistry & Technology of the Environment with Distinction, both from the University of Athens, Greece. She received her PhD from the Cyprus University of Technology in the field of Water Spectroscopy and Remote Sensing for monitoring water quality over surface water bodies (inland & coastal).

Professional background / participation in funded projects: She is currently a Researcher A and has been a member of the research team of Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, Remote Sensing and Geo-Environment Lab (ERATOSTHENES Research Centre) since 2009. During these years, she has been involved in the writing and submission of several research project proposals in various calls, such as H2020, INTERREG, ESA-PECS, RPF/RIF, etc. and has participated in more than 15 research projects. She has been involved in activities such as giving presentations related to the research activities of the ERC to primary and high schools in the framework of research activities organised by the Research Promotion Foundation (Cyprus) such as the ‘Week of Research and Innovation’ and the ERC as member of the Copernicus Academy and FabSpace Network. She leads the participation of the ERC to the European Researchers’ Night (yearly since 2014); and the collaboration with high schools aiming to support students to participate in school competitions. She participated in numerous EU funded research projects, such as: CROSS (ESA-PECS) – Preparatory activity for monitoring & identification of arable CROps in cypruS from Space; SOFIA (ESA-PECS) – Schools’ encouragement in educatiOn and outreach oF Earth surveIllance And remote sensing’, SWSOIP (ESA-PECS): ‘Smart Watering System for Optimising Irrigation Process; CopHub.AC (H2020) – Copernicus Academy Hub for Knowledge, Innovation and Outreach; EXCELSIOR (H2020) – ERATOSTHENES: Excellence Research Centre for Earth Surveillance and Space-Based Monitoring of the Environment; CyCLOPS (RPF/RIF) – Cyprus Continuously Operating Natural Hazards Monitoring & Prevention System; ATHENA (H2020) – Remote Sensing Science Center for Cultural Heritage; SEO-DWARF (H2020 MSCA RISE 2015) – Semantic EO Data Web Alert and Retrieval Framework; THAL-CHOR 2 (INTERREG) – Cross-Border Cooperation for the development of Marine Spatial Planning 2; MEDNET (MED) – Mediterranean Network for Custom Procedures and Simplification of Clearance in Ports; CASCADE (FP7) – Catastrophic shifts in drylands: how can we prevent ecosystem degradation.

Research interests: Water resources management; Surface water quality monitoring of inland & coastal water bodies; Smart water management for agriculture; Remote Sensing; Ground field spectroscopy; Educational activities / Promote Remote Sensing to Schools
