Education: She holds a B.Sc. in Marine Sciences (University of the Aegean, Greece) and an M.Sc. in Geography and Applied GeoInformatics (University of the Aegean, Greece).
Professional background / participation in funded projects: In 2016, she participated in a) Thalchor -Marine spatial planning in the Aegean Sea for the protection and conservation of biodiversity. The main object was ecological species detection and mapping and b) Seagrass detection and mapping in southern Greece with satellite data. The aim of the project was seagrass meadows detection by objected-based image analysis. As an MSc student, from October of 2017 to January 2018, she was employed as a teaching assistant in Labs of Computer Science by the Dep. of Geography, University of the Aegean, Greece. In 2018, she participated in the Second Cycle of Erasmus+ Programme at Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus. Since November 2019, Despina Makri is a research assistant at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, Remote Sensing and Geo-Environment Lab (ERATOSTHENES Research Centre). She works in Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) H2020-MSCA-RISE-2018.
Research interests: Her research interests include remote sensing, object-based image analysis, data acquisition, image processing, GIS analysis, and coastal habitat mapping with high-resolution imagery (UAV). Since November 2019, she has been working on land movements with the use of Sentinel-1 satellite data.
