Dr. Michalis Mavrovouniotis has been ranked among the top six scientists of the world in the IT field of Ant Colony Optimization – Swarm Intelligence.
Mavrovouniotis is Deputy Coordinator of the Big Earth Data Analytics Department at the Cyprus University of Technology’s ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence.
According to a CUT announcement, Mavrovouniotis was listed by the ScholarGPS platform ( https://scholargps.com/ ) which rated more than 30 million scientists from more than 55,000 institutions in over 200 countries.
It is noted that the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence has been operating since 2020 in Limassol and plays a decisive role in Cyprus’ positioning in the space arena.
The Centre also contributes to the promotion of Cyprus as a regional hub of technology and innovation by combining infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment, cutting-edge research, targeted educational services and entrepreneurship actions, CUT noted.
Mavrovouniotis received a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Computer Science from the University of Leicester, UK (2008), a M.Sc. degree in Natural Computation from the University of Birmingham, UK (2009), and ta Ph.D degree in Computer Science from the University of Leicester, UK (2013). Before joining ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, he worked as a Research Associate at KIOS Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence, University of Cyprus (2018-2023), as a Senior Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, UK (2016-2018), as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Centre of Computational Intelligence, De Montfort University Leicester, UK (2013-2016).
His research interests include evolutionary computation, neural computation, swarm intelligence, memetic computing, combinatorial optimization problems, heuristic and metaheuristics, artificial intelligence in dynamic and uncertain environments, and relevant real-world applications. He has contributed to several funded projects (with partners in both academia and industry).
Mavrovouniotis has more than 70 peer-reviewed publications (with h-index of 25 according to Google Scholar) and was included in the Stanford University World’s Top 2% Scientists list published in October 2023. He is currently the Chair of the IEEE Task Force on Evolutionary Computation in Dynamic and Uncertain Environments, a member of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society and an Associate Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy.
