ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and EUROGATE strengthen cooperation to advance innovation and digital transformation at the Port of Limassol
The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and EUROGATE Container Terminal Limassol Ltd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the beginning of a new collaboration between the research community and the port and maritime sector. The agreement was signed by Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Managing Director of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, and Mr Alexandros Demetriades, Chief Operating Officer of EUROGATE Container Terminal Limassol Ltd, during the EXCELSIOR Space Industry Day: Synergies and Collaboration, held on 11 March 2026 at the Blue Economy Innovation Centre of the Municipality of Limassol.
The MoU aims to explore opportunities for the deployment of advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Geographic Information Systems and Earth Observation data, with the objective of optimising port operations, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting the technological modernisation of port infrastructure and services.
During the signing ceremony, Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis highlighted the collaboration that has already been initiated between the two organisations and expressed his sincere appreciation to Dr Dirk Roland Haupt, Minister Counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Germany in Nicosia, for facilitating the strategic introduction between the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and EUROGATE.
“Members of the Marine Security and Safety research team of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence have already visited the Port of Limassol and met with the EUROGATE team, laying the groundwork for this collaboration. The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding represents an important step towards developing innovative applications that can support the operation of modern and smart ports. Our objective is to translate the research excellence and technological expertise of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence into practical solutions that enhance the efficiency, safety and sustainability of port operations,” he stated.
On behalf of EUROGATE Container Terminal Limassol Ltd, Mr Alexandros Demetriades referred to the company’s commitment to further modernising the Port of Limassol through the integration of innovative technologies.
“Our objective is to further enhance the Port of Limassol through the integration of new technologies and innovative solutions. We aim to ensure that the port keeps pace with technological developments, including the use of Artificial Intelligence applications, and continues to evolve in line with modern operational requirements. At the same time, we seek to ensure that the Port of Limassol remains a strong and competitive gateway for the region for the next hundred years,” he said.
The collaboration reflects the shared vision of the two organisations to promote innovation, technological advancement and knowledge exchange in the port and maritime sector. By leveraging Earth Observation data and advanced digital technologies, the partnership is expected to contribute to the digital transformation of port operations, strengthening efficiency, safety and the long term competitiveness of the Port of Limassol.

Το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ και η EUROGATE ενισχύουν τη συνεργασία για την καινοτομία και τον ψηφιακό μετασχηματισμό στο λιμάνι της Λεμεσού
Το Κέντρο Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ και η EUROGATE Container Terminal Limassol Ltd υπέγραψαν Μνημόνιο Συναντίληψης (MoU), σηματοδοτώντας την έναρξη μιας νέας συνεργασίας μεταξύ της ερευνητικής κοινότητας και του λιμενικού και θαλάσσιου τομέα. Η συμφωνία υπογράφηκε από τον Καθηγητή Διοφάντο Χατζημιτσή, Διευθύνοντα Σύμβουλο του Κέντρου Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ, και τον κ. Αλέξανδρο Δημητριάδη, Chief Operating Officer της EUROGATE Container Terminal Limassol Ltd, στο πλαίσιο της εκδήλωσης EXCELSIOR Space Industry Day: Synergies and Collaboration, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 11 Μαρτίου 2026 στο Blue Economy Innovation Centre του Δήμου Λεμεσού.
Η συμφωνία αποσκοπεί στη διερεύνηση ευκαιριών αξιοποίησης προηγμένων τεχνολογιών, όπως η Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη, τα Γεωγραφικά Συστήματα Πληροφοριών και δεδομένα Παρατήρησης Γης, με στόχο τη βελτιστοποίηση των λιμενικών λειτουργιών, την ενίσχυση της επιχειρησιακής αποδοτικότητας και τη στήριξη του τεχνολογικού εκσυγχρονισμού των λιμενικών υποδομών.
Κατά την τελετή υπογραφής, ο Καθηγητής Διοφάντος Χατζημιτσής αναφέρθηκε στη συνεργασία που έχει ήδη αναπτυχθεί μεταξύ των δύο οργανισμών και εξέφρασε τις ειλικρινείς του ευχαριστίες προς τον Dr. Dirk Roland Haupt, Minister Counselor και Deputy Chief of Mission της Πρεσβείας της Γερμανίας στη Λευκωσία, για τη διευκόλυνση της στρατηγικής γνωριμίας μεταξύ του Κέντρου Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ και της EUROGATE.
«Μέλη της ερευνητικής ομάδας του τομέα Marine Security and Safety του Κέντρου Αριστείας ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ επισκέφθηκαν ήδη το λιμάνι της Λεμεσού και συναντήθηκαν με την ομάδα της EUROGATE, θέτοντας τα θεμέλια για τη συνεργασία αυτή. Η σημερινή υπογραφή του Μνημονίου Συναντίληψης αποτελεί ένα σημαντικό βήμα για την ανάπτυξη καινοτόμων εφαρμογών που μπορούν να υποστηρίξουν τη λειτουργία σύγχρονων και “έξυπνων” λιμένων. Στόχος μας είναι να μετατρέψουμε τη γνώση και την ερευνητική αριστεία του Κέντρου ΕΡΑΤΟΣΘΕΝΗΣ σε πρακτικές τεχνολογικές λύσεις που ενισχύουν την αποδοτικότητα, την ασφάλεια και τη βιωσιμότητα των λιμενικών λειτουργιών», ανέφερε.
Από πλευράς της EUROGATE, ο κ. Αλέξανδρος Δημητριάδης αναφέρθηκε στη δέσμευση της εταιρείας για τον εκσυγχρονισμό του λιμανιού μέσω της αξιοποίησης νέων τεχνολογιών.
«Στόχος μας είναι να αναβαθμίσουμε περαιτέρω το λιμάνι της Λεμεσού μέσω της ενσωμάτωσης νέων τεχνολογιών και καινοτόμων λύσεων. Θέλουμε να διασφαλίσουμε ότι το λιμάνι θα συμβαδίζει με τις τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της αξιοποίησης εφαρμογών Τεχνητής Νοημοσύνης, και θα συνεχίσει να εξελίσσεται σύμφωνα με τις σύγχρονες επιχειρησιακές απαιτήσεις. Παράλληλα, επιδιώκουμε να διασφαλίσουμε ότι το λιμάνι της Λεμεσού θα παραμείνει μια ισχυρή και ανταγωνιστική εμπορική πύλη για την περιοχή για τα επόμενα εκατό χρόνια», δήλωσε.
Η συνεργασία αυτή αντανακλά το κοινό όραμα των δύο οργανισμών για την ενίσχυση της καινοτομίας και της τεχνολογικής προόδου στον λιμενικό και θαλάσσιο τομέα. Μέσα από την αξιοποίηση δεδομένων Παρατήρησης Γης και προηγμένων ψηφιακών τεχνολογιών, η συνεργασία αναμένεται να συμβάλει στον ψηφιακό μετασχηματισμό των λιμενικών λειτουργιών, ενισχύοντας την αποδοτικότητα, την ασφάλεια και τη μακροπρόθεσμη ανταγωνιστικότητα του λιμανιού της Λεμεσού.
