Education: Kyriacos Themistocleous holds a PhD in Remote Sensing and GIS, a Master’s in Urban Design from the University of Oklahoma, USA and a Bachelor’s of Architecture from the University of Louisiana, USA.
Professional Background: Dr Themistocleous has 30 years of experience in Earth observation, remote sensing, architecture, urban design & planning, GIS and cultural heritage. He has managed many international projects, both in industry, applied research and development. He has been involved in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, Remote Sensing and Geo-Environment Lab (ERATOSTHENES Research Centre) since its inception 11 years ago. Dr Themistocleous is President of the Cyprus Remote Sensing Society, Executive Council member of the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK) and treasurer of the Cyprus branch of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). He is also a member of the Cyprus Architect Association, American Institute of Architects (AIA), the National Council of Architecture Registration Board (NCARB), the Architecture Honours Society and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE). He is a licensed architect in Cyprus and the United States as well as a Qualified Expert on the Energy Performance of Buildings for the Energy Service of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism in Cyprus. He participated in the special committee of the Department of Transportation, Ministry of Public Works, Cyprus for Space, in relation with the European Space Agency. He is the national representative for the Copernicus User Forum, the Copernicus Cultural Heritage Task Force, the Copernicus Relay Network and the Copernicus Academy. He is serving as a reviewer for the European Union proposal evaluation committee for the H2020-SPACE-2020, as well as a member of the Leadership committee of the EU Framework Partnership Agreement on Copernicus User Uptake. He is the Project Manager of Excelsior2020 and nominated as the External Affairs & Business Development Director of the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence.
Research: His research includes aerial and satellite remote sensing, GIS, spectroscopy, sustainable development, geophysics, BIM, life cycle cost, cultural heritage and environmental sciences. Dr Themistocleous has collaborated in over 30 national and European research projects, including HORIZON 2020, FP7, FP6, LIFE+, ERASMUS+, MED, INTERREG, EUREKA, COST, JPI, etc. He has taught at various universities for the past 20 years as well as conducted training at various institutions and agencies both in Cyprus and abroad. Currently, he has over 270 publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and conference proceedings with over 1,000 citations. He is the Organizer and Chair of the International Conference on Remote Sensing and Geo‐information (RSCy2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019) (co‐organised by ESA and published by SPIE). As well, he has participated as chairman in several international conferences as well as reviewer and editor for several scientific journals.
