Mr Philip FAYAD

Research Assistant A

Education: Mr. Philip Fayad is currently a PhD Candidate in the field of “Geospatial Big Data Processing and analytics” at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics (CEG) of Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) under the supervision of Prof. Phaedon Kyriakidis. He holds a bachelor’s degree with honors (aristeio) as well as an MSc in “Geoinformatics and Geospatial Technologies” from Cyprus University of Technology. For his MSc studies he graduated with distinction and received a full scholarship from the Cyprus State Institution (IKYΚ), based on his academic performance.

Professional background / participation in funded projects: In the past, Mr. Fayad has worked as a Research Associate (GIS Specialist) at Electricity Authority of Cyprus and a Trainee GIS Analyst at Marathon Data Systems (the official distributor of ESRI’s products -ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcGIS Server-  in Greece and Cyprus). Additionally, among four others, he is the co-founder of the QGIS Cyprus community, a newly established initiative with the aim to gather the Cypriot QGIS Users and Developers and spread the knowledge in Open-source GIS technologies through events, meetups, hack-days, workshops and seminars.

Research interests: His research interests focus in Geoinformatics, Geostatistics, Spatial Analysis, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) towards spatial problem solving. During his Bachelor degree thesis he studied about “Developing a Methodology for Selecting Points from a Digital Surface Model for the Production of a 3D Digital Elevation Model” and his MSc thesis deals with “Spatial Downscaling of wind predictive models using geostatistical methods and Sentinel-1 satellite data images: Application in the coastal areas of Cyprus”. Additionally, by being involved in many awareness activities, workshops and events (eg. NASA Space Apps Challenge, TEDx, etc.) he is described as a Science and Technology enthusiast and an environmentally concerned individual. He is a member of Geospatial Analytics Lab (CUT) and as of October 2018, also a member of the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK).
